  1. Really Nice Bases -but the Magnets...

Posted by JT on 13th Jan 2017

The acrylic and plywood products that Litko produces are great, and I have purchased many of them over the years. Recently, I decided to get into an AWI skirmish game which requires the use of movement trays. Litko was the first place I looked of course, and then I discovered their article on using movement trays with magnets. Having used magnets for smaller scale games, this seemed like a cool idea. So along with my plywood bases, I ordered a bunch of flex steel and flex magnets. Having tested the two together now, I can't recommend the latter product. Perhaps the .6 lbs/in heavy duty magnets are significantly better, I'm not sure, but I'm certain that I have no use for the regular flex magnets I ordered. Problem is, they're just too weak to really make a difference above and beyond the model's own weight, and the cut of the movement tray itself. Even without a base or miniature attached to the magnet, it barely sticks to the flex steel at all. Once you stick it onto a based miniature (even plastic), it's pretty much useless. It's sort of unfortunate because they are well made and therefore not inexpensive. Now I'm not sure what to do with 100 of them.

The flex-steels on the other hand are more useful, and I've tested them with miniature neodymium magnets of various sizes. Even with 1/8" sized magnets, the hold is pretty strong for any 28mm, though metal figures would probably best be served with something a bit larger. So what I will probably do is drill into the movement trays and install magnets, and then mount the flex steel on the miniature bases. If or when the flex steel pieces will no longer stay on the bases, then I'll just glue them to the bases or switch to magnet/magnet connections.

These non-slotted bases are perfect for all my old and newer 25mm miniatures. I would highly recommend them to all gamers. I am very pleased to have received them in a timely fashion.
